Changes in sound, smell, or heating performance are reasons to have a furnace checked. Some faults have no obvious warning; routine symptoms do not establish whether a system is safe.

Heater runs without warming.

Constant cycling with cold air points to ignition, burner, or heat-exchanger problems that need a trained look.

Burning or musty smells.

First-burn-of-the-season dust is normal. Persistent odors are not — shut the system off and call.

Bangs, rattles, or whistles.

Have new or persistent noises checked by a qualified technician. Sound alone cannot identify a faulty heat exchanger or establish carbon-monoxide safety. Carbon monoxide cannot be seen or smelled.
